NERO have become a big name in both the Drum and Bass and Dubstep scenes, often fusing both styles of music in their DJ sets. They started with DnB, joining DJ SS’s Formation Records in the Summer of 2004. Since then Dan and Joe’s tracks have caused quite a stir, gaining huge support from DJs like Andy C, Grooverider and Friction, as well as radio airplay from Zane Lowe, Jo Whiley, Pete Tong, Annie Mac, Rob Da Bank, Steve Lamacq and Fabio & Grooverider, to name just a few.

In June 2006 Nero released their acclaimed EP, “Requiem EP” on Formation Records. The EP featured 4 top tracks, Requiem, Bitch I’m Gone, Autopsy and Bad For the Brain. High Contrast included Bitch I’m Gone in his mix for the legendary Fabric Live series, Fabric Live 25.

2009 saw Nero’s first release on iconic label Breakbeat Kaos. The killer track ‘Act Like You Know’, backed with Sound in Motion and a dubstep edit of the title track, has been hitting dancefloors across the world for the last year and was picked up by Fresh and Adam F.

Onto Dubstep…. Nero’s debut dubstep release, ‘This Way’, became one of the biggest dubstep tunes of 2008 and is still selling big units across the world. Since then, Nero’s consistent releases have made them one of the most talked about acts in dubstep. Their remix of the Streets’ tune ‘Blinded by the Lights’ was a massive radio hit as well as a dancefloor smasher played by DJ’s from Chase and Status and Skream to Tiesto and Diplo. More recently Nero have remixed La Roux and Deadmau5 to devastating effect.

The boy’s DJing career has also taken off this year, October saw an intensive gigging schedule which included supporting Deadmau5, Chase & Status and Zane Lowe on their UK tours.

They recently won the 2010 Beatport awards for best Dubstep Act and Best Dubstep Track for “Act Like You Know”.

Deadmau5 was back in Denver after his praised Global Dance performance to deliver 2 nights of amazing music and visual stimulation. The crowds were very hungry to see the Mau5 and so was I, since I had not seen him since the Ogden last year. As it started to fill, the Fillmore felt like it had more electricity than a lightning storm in the air as locals Jonas Temple (Wednesday night) and Sir Thomas (Thursday night) warmed up the crowd.  Skrillex known for his amazing remixes of La Roux, Lady Gaga and Black Eyed Peas was on next and he definitely brought the Womp! I was amazed in listening that I knew alot of his great remixes and tracks! Spinning a multi-genre set of Electro, Dubstep and Drum and Bass, he definitely captivated myself and the now packed house. Of course he played his signature track “My name is Skrillex” as well, which just created and built the hype even more for Joel Zimmerman (Deadmau5).

The crowd went absolutely bonkers at the sight of the LED packed Mau5 head. In true Deadmau5 style Joel built the music and the visual intensity throughout his whole set. One hit after another he controlled and played with the senses of thousands of people. “Reward is Cheese,” “Ghosts n Stuff” and his new track “Sofi Needs a Ladder” were all driving everyone in a frenzy!  I was very impressed at the the progression of the new LED set up in his mask and on stage. Vertical LED bars, LED packed cube and his Mau5 head practically changed into every color through out the night. Synced to the beat, every song created a different visual atmosphere and feel from the previous.
The packed house demanded an encore from the Mau5 and they got one as Joel delivered a 15 to 20 minute set of Dubstep. I was pretty much amazed because at the previous Ogden show there was no Dubstep to be heard. It made me relize that Dubstep is a driving force that all house DJ’s and producers will have to face if they want to keep up on the cutting edge of electronic music. With his popularity built in Electro House I am looking forward to see how the Mau5 mutates his style in a growing Dubstep world.  All in all a great show!

Port Washington, N.Y. – The votes have all been counted and it’s official – DJ Times magazine and Pioneer DJ are proud to announce that DJ Qbert has been voted America’s Best DJ for 2010.

The talented San Francisco-based jock – and ABDJ runner-up in both 2008 and 2009 – will be honored October 2 in Las Vegas for the ABDJ Closing Party, which will include a press reception at Ghost Bar in The Palms Hotel & Casino. After being presented with his trophy – a special Gold-Plated Pioneer mixer – from 2009 America’s Best DJ winner Z-Trip, DJ Qbert will perform at the Rain Nightclub for Paul Oakenfold’s Planet Perfecto party, one of America’s wildest nights out. (Incidentally, Z-Trip maintains his “Z-Trip Revolution” residency at the Rain nightclub in The Palms, where he took over the decks after the passing of DJ AM.)

“Skratching Lives! What a great opportunity to show that we DJs are musicians. Thank you to everyone at DJ Times, ThudRumble.com, and everyone for supporting the skratch art!,” said DJ Qbert, reacting to the news that he was voted 2010 champ.

Running in tandem with the competition, the 20-event America’s Best DJ Summer Tour (presented by Pioneer DJ) kicked off Memorial Day Weekend at Movement: Detroit’s Electronic Music Festival and wraps with the closing party at the Palms on October 2. Along the way, America’s Best DJ summer tour stopped at Baltimore’s Starscape Festival, New York’s Black & White Festival, Denver’s Global Dance Festival and Atlantic City’s DJ Expo, among many other events.

Additionally, we’re happy to announce that Kelly Perry of Denver, Colorado has won the ABDJ Grand Prize trip for two to Las Vegas that includes roundtrip airfare, accommodations at The Palms, and VIP treatment at the America’s Best DJ closing party in Rain Nightclub.

A genuine DJ legend, Qbert is a turntablist who makes other jocks stand back in awe. Hailing from the San Francisco area, QBert gained fame as a competition-winning battle jock and as one-fifth of the Invisibl Skratch Piklz DJ crew. Always the innovator, QBert’s repertoire of scratches and other tricks has won a global following of fans and vinyl-fetish DJs.

SECOND PLACE – Kaskade

A DJ whose profile continues to rise, Kaskade (aka Ryan Raddon) has become one of our most in-demand club talents, not to mention one of America’s most prolific producers. A creator of six artist albums, including 2010′s Dynasty, Kaskade has enjoyed chart success with that CD’s eponymous single, plus others like “Move For Me” (with Canada’s Deadmau5), “Everything” and “Stars Align.”

THIRD PLACE – A-Trak

By the time he was old enough to vote, A-Trak (aka Alain Macklovitch) had won more international championships than Sugar Ray Robinson. Indeed, between 1997 and 2000, A-Trak took eight different DJ titles, including the 1997 DMC World Championship at the precocious age of 15, making him the organization’s youngest winner. Now a seasoned veteran, the Montreal-born A-Trak went on to become Kanye West’s Tour DJ, launched the ultra hip Fool’s Gold Records and scored big with a number of remixes, most notably with The Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ “Off With their Heads.”

2010 AMERICA’S BEST DJ AWARDS CEREMONY AND CLOSING PARTY

First of all I have to say, this is the third Global that I have been to and this year the Triad Dragons put the rest to shame. Tens of thousands of local and international fans came together for a night of complete and utter, electronic chaos. If you haven’t had a chance to experience Red Rocks Ampitheater try to make it to Global next year. The formation of “red rocks” is a naturally perfect venue for acoustics. The first day the bleachers were absolutely packed and the crowd went wild with camera flashes and screaming as the mushroom props started to inflate and Infected Mushroom took the stage. They were definitely feeling the energy, jumping off the risers on the stage, and the crowd was loving it. Rusko properly did some work on the speakers as he tore the upper stage to shreds with his filthy dubstep and he even went into a little dutch house when he played. I personally think he should have been on the main stage. Great performances by Pendulum with Mc Dino, Savoy, and Deadmau5 as well. The light setup was insane this year and I had the opportunity to meet the people with Laser Dreams from San Francisco. I believe he said each one of those lasers on the stage were 4 watts. The giant L.E.D. box was bad ass, it gave the whole stage a 3 dimensional feel the way they had it angled, not to mention whoever was running it had it synced perfectly to the music. Big ups to Ishe & Soleil, wish I could have been there to see you guys play but my flight was delayed and didnt get back to Denver until 8. Also big shout out to Cognition, T Rav and Nexus for the production upstairs sounded great and looked amazing too.

Day two was awesome as well I feel like the trance theme was a good fit for a second day of craziness. Jess, ATB, Kaskade, Paul Van Dyke, Trajikk and Dragon took everybody to another level on the mainstage but Steve Aoki and L.A. Riots brought the LA elecro hyphyness that i was looking for. Aoki was droppin’ all kinds of tracks that I knew including “I’m In The House” and one of my favorite remixes “Warp 1977.” Everyone was soooo hyped for him too. The security had to hold the front gate back because people were pushing it foward as he jumped around on the microphone and stood up on the dj booth! Huge thanks to Steve and Chris for the shout outs and I deffinitely expect you guys to start coming to Denver more often!

What’s up dance music fans? Boulder’s very own Savoy has released their second EP of the year, entitled Nothin For Nothin, and this time the trio is back with original tracks as well as remixes of artists Dire Straights, No Doubt and Santigold.

I remember the first time I ever managed to catch Savoy live, and it was on top of a mountain at the beautiful Red Rocks Amphitheatre and with a view of the city of Denver I took in for the first time one of my current favorite acts in dance music. The set at Monolith was earth-shaking and before I knew it the show was over and I was out of breath from gettin down to those live drums and great sounding FX. After Monolith Festival, and I am certain that I am not alone in this, I rushed home to Google whatever I could to find on this band and I first heard their first LP, Automatic, and was instantly a fan.

The new EP, to a degree is similar to the first album and EP but listening through the bass thumps even harder than ever before. The EP kicks off with ‘Back To Basics’ a club-thumper with dead-sexy vocals and a build that blew my mind, I can tell this track is gonna be knockin’ em dead at Savoy shows for awhile. Next is ‘Hella Good’ with vocoder vocals and hard house synths at the start, and as always Savoy teases the listener with that so-desired drop to come. When the drop actually does hit the ears, you can not help but dance at least a little bit in your desk. The drums are awesome in this track, as usual, really adds to the sound. When the drop actually does come, hold on to your seat.

The next track ‘Life of the Party’ reminds me a lot of previous Savoy efforts, but is a fairly solid track. The Shove It (Remix) that follows is one of the strongest tracks on the EP. The vocals are awesome and the drop is as heavy as we would expect from Savoy, but employ a sort of bass walk throughout the song for a somewhat tribal feel. The following song ‘Real People’ may remind a lot of you of a famous deadmau5 song, but it is not too hard to see what Savoy was trying to go with the song. It will be a hit at shows.

The final track, the title track ‘Nothin for Nothin’ is probably the best song on the EP and the one I would most recommend to DJs lookin for some new Savoy to be mixed into your set. Its got a thunderous bassline mixed in with some crazy sounding synths. Hell even has a little electric guitar riff mixed into the track. Great stuff.

Be sure to check out Savoy Friday night at Global Dance Festival. This is definetly their biggest show ever with heavyweights like deadmau5, Infected Mushroom, Rusko, Kaskade, Pendulum, Paul Van Dyk and more on the bill!! Last week was Maimi’s WMC and Ultra Music Festival. The five day combination consists of over 200 artists from all around the world performing at various events and festivals all over Miami. Over 100,000 people filled the streets in search of the best concert on any given night, creating a chaos of partiers running through the streets. If you missed it don’t worry because I was there to experience it for you.

All four members of Electrolightz have had a great deal of independent success. Rami Dearst, son of renowned violinist Itzhak Perlman, fronted the band Something for Rockets, who were featured on MTV’s You Hear It First, and gained consistent radio play on college radio and LA stations such as Indie 103.1 and KCRW. SFR’s second album was produced by Blink 182 front man Mark Hoppus. Rapper Namebrand gained his rapping chops as the protégé of notorious Hip Hop artist Rass Kass which enabled Namebrand to travel the world on tour along with Rass Kass and legendary rapper Rakim. He has been described as putting out high energy music with innovative lyrics and delivery. ErOc has has had commercial success with his production team called Da Riffs. He and partner Zed Kelly, have produced a number of video game scores for EA Sports in addition to producing tracks for well-known rappers, such as50cent, Young Buck , Pitbull, Chamillionaire, and Method Man.
